Automotive Sector Continued..

Teenage car insurance is a big element of cost and cause for concern overall. Here is an initiative to better understand teenage driving habits and provide (constructive) feedback. Is this a good use of video technology or is it an invasion of privacy?

It was a bit unclear from the video who will have access to and review the recorded driving footage. Will the parents review it? Will the insurance companies review it? Either way a bigger question becomes - who has time to watch the footage of their teenager's drives? If you FFWD through it you loose the ability to judge rapid breaking/accelerating/speeding/etc. So unless there is some sort of mechanism that can highlight areas of recklessness then I do not see much value in this. (Yes the teenagers may have a favorable psychological reaction to the installed cameras, but once they realize that no one is watching the footage that will quickly fade away, just like a reality TV show on Fox)

Progressive was running a pilot program in 2004 where driving data was aggregated and could be uploaded to a PC and irregularities in acceleration/deceleration/speeds /etc. could easily be identified. Combine this with GPS and a mapping program to understand that your crazy teenager was not driving 55 on the highway but on the back roads with a limit of 25mph and you have a much more useful information from this device than from a mpeg of junior driving to the arcade.

Additionally, it is not an invasion of privacy if you consent to it. No one is forcing anyone to do this. If you are afraid the insurance company can use their records to prove your car was used in a bank robbery then don't complain about not being able to save 5% on your car insurance.

Parents want to save a couple of dollars and in return they let the insurance company know how fast their kid drives and in which parking lot corner they park to make out and smoke cigarettes when not under the watchful eye of their parents - everyone wins.

Howdy! This article couldn't be written much better! Looking through this article reminds me of my previous roommate! He always kept preaching about this. I most certainly will send this information to him. Fairly certain he'll have a good read.
