Visual Map of Google News

Cool visual map of Google News using a treemap visualization algorithm. Newsmap is trying to "reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe."

Here's the link.

Tree maps, like the one representing activity on Google News, seem an intriguing way for humans to quickly process dense information on several dimensions.

We could easily imagine search results returning more value to the searcher this way, with the relative size of the component regions representing the search frequency of links and the color indicating whether the frequency is increasing or decreasing.

We are in desperate needs of new ways of organizing information that are more in sync with the way our minds work. See "Discovering Business Intelligence Using Treemap Visualizations" for an overview of efforts.
